Book 3 covers the 9 learning intentions for children aged about 5 to 7 years old.

 

At this level, children are able to solve addition and subtraction problems to 10 using their fingers. They now need to learn to hold an image of these numbers in their head. They can now explore problems with bigger numbers and also start to group objects into tens to begin to learn about place value. They can begin multiplication and division problems by skip counting in twos, fives and tens. They can explore fractions of sets of objects.

 

The learning intentions covered in this book are:

• Able to solve addition and subtraction by counting all
• Able to record using pictures, diagrams and words
• Able to use + and - to record number facts
• Able to recognise numerals to 20
• Able to count forwards and backwards in range 0-20
• Able to count a set of objects up to 20
• Able to order numbers to 20
• Able to give number before and after up to 20
• Able to predict number patterns

Book 4 covers the 7 learning intentions for children aged about 6 to 7 years old.

 

At this level, children can now hold numbers in their minds without having to look at all the objects. They need to learn to count on from the highest number for addition, and back for subtraction, e.g., 9 and 4 is (10, 11, 12, 13) 13!

 

The learning intentions covered in this book are:

• Able to use a number line to solve addition and subtraction
• Able to solve addition and subtraction by counting on from the largest number
• Able to use = in number sentences
• Knows groupings within 10
• Able to skip count in twos, fives and tens
• Able to recall doubles facts to 10
• Able to recall facts with 5

The Linear Series (Books 1-20) cover ALL learning intentions in the curriculum. They start at Year 0 (Book 1) and continue to Year 6 (Stage 6). The Linear Series books are recommended if you wish to support your child through the mathematics curriculum as they grow.

The Subject Area books (addition and subtraction, multiplication and fractions) are collections of the material taken from the Linear Series (Books 1-20). The Subject Area books cover only learning intentions that are relevant to that book. The Subject Area books are recommended if your child has a particular difficulty in one area, like fractions.
