Level 1 Fractions covers the fractions only learning intentions for children aged about 5 to 7 years old (Years 1-3).
At this level, students are starting to understand that numbers can be thought of as “wholes” and be divided (or “cut into”) several parts. They are learning their doubles and halves to 20 and are beginning to recognise the common unit fractions ½, ⅓, ¼ and ⅕. At this level, students will need reminding that fractions are equal parts of a whole.
The learning intentions covered in this book are:
- Able to recognise symbols for half and quarter
- Able to find halves and quarters of shapes (early)
- Able to find halves and quarters of sets
- Able to find halves and quarters of shapes (advanced)
- Able to find half or quarter of a set using doubles

Level 2 Fractions covers the fractions only learning intentions for children aged about 7 to 9 years old (Years 3-5).
At this level, students understand that fractions are equal parts of whole numbers, and they can recognise all common unit fractions (e.g., ¼). They are still working on strategies to find fractions of sets (e.g., one quarter of 20 is 5) and the ordering of fractions (e.g., that ½ is bigger than ¼). They have briefly been introduced to improper fractions (those with values over 1) and are starting to learn some of the more common equivalent fractions (e.g., 1/2 is the same as 2⁄4).
The learning intentions covered in this book are:
- Understands sizes of fractions in relation to the whole
- Able to order unit fractions
- Able to find ½, ¼, ⅓ and ⅕ using additive strategies
- Understands division as sharing or grouping
- Able to find non-unit fractions of shapes

Level 3 Fractions covers the fractions only learning intentions for children aged about 9 to 11 years old (Years 5-7).
At this level, students are beginning to order fractions more freely and are starting to gain a good understanding of improper and mixed fractions (those with values over 1). Here, they are formally introduced to equivalent fractions, ratios and percentages and are just starting out on their understanding of the relationships between these and decimals.
The learning intentions covered in this book are:
- Able to order unit fractions (advanced)
- Able to use improper fractions and mixed numbers
- Knows simple equivalent fractions
- Able to solve simple ratio problems using repeated replication
- Understands percentages as special fractions
- Knows common percentages
The Linear Series (Books 1-20) cover ALL learning intentions in the curriculum. They start at Year 0 (Book 1) and continue to Year 6 (Stage 6). The Linear Series books are recommended if you wish to support your child through the mathematics curriculum as they grow.
The Subject Area books (addition and subtraction, multiplication and fractions) are collections of the material taken from the Linear Series (Books 1-20). The Subject Area books cover only learning intentions that are relevant to that book. The Subject Area books are recommended if your child has a particular difficulty in one area, like fractions.
