Level 3 Addition and Subtraction covers the addition and subtraction only learning intentions for children aged about 9 to 11 years old.
At this level, students are able to use mental strategies for addition and subtraction with 2-digits numbers. This is extended to 3-digit numbers in this book and we introduce the standard written method for addition and subtraction, also. Students are now able to select from the range of strategies they know, to solve problems efficiently.
The learning intentions covered in this book are:
- Able to use compensation to add 3-digit numbers
- Able to use tidy numbers to add 3-digit numbers
- Able to use standard partitioning to add 3-digit numbers
- Able to use difference to subtract 3-digit numbers
- Able to use standard partitioning to subtract 3-digit numbers
- Able to use the standard written method for addition
- Able to use the standard written method for subtraction
- Able to select from a range of strategies, including the standard written method
Level 3 Multiplication covers the multiplication only learning intentions for children aged about 9 to 11 years old.
At this level, students should have committed most of their times tables (to 12 x 12) to memory and understand the fundamental concept of multiplication. They should now be gaining awareness of the relationship between multiplication and division and be starting to develop the ability to extend their core strategies for addition and subtraction to multiplication (and later division). From here, students have a base knowledge to grasp algebra.
The learning intentions covered in this book are:
- Able to multiply a 2-digit number by a single-digit number using a mental method
- Able to multiply a 2-digit number by a single-digit number using a written method
- Able to multiply a 3-digit number by a single-digit number using a mental method
- Able to multiply a 3-digit number by a single-digit number using a written method
- Knows and understands square numbers up to 20 x 20
- Able to use multiplication facts to solve division problems
- Able to identify factors and multiples
Level 3 Fractions covers the fractions only learning intentions for children aged about 9 to 11 years old.
At this level, students are beginning to order fractions more freely and are starting to gain a good understanding of improper and mixed fractions (those with values over 1). Here, they are formally introduced to equivalent fractions, ratios and percentages and are just starting out on their understanding of the relationships between these and decimals.
The learning intentions covered in this book are:
- Able to order unit fractions (advanced)
- Able to use improper fractions and mixed numbers
- Knows simple equivalent fractions
- Able to solve simple ratio problems using repeated replication
- Understands percentages as special fractions
- Knows common percentages
Level 3 Decimals covers the decimals only learning intentions for children aged about 9 to 11 years old.
At this level, students are comfortable with the decimal system so that they can extend their knowledge beyond the decimal point and order and round decimal numbers. They are able to understand the relationship between decimals and fractions, and convert between the two. Students are learning to add and subtract decimal numbers using their place value knowledge and can work with numbers up to three decimal places and solve problems.
The learning intentions covered in this book are:
- Able to understand a decimal as a fraction
- Able to explain the value of digits up to two decimal places
- Able to order decimals with up to two decimal places
- Able to add and subtract decimals up to two decimal places
- Able to solve problems involving decimals
- Able to understand decimals as special fractions
- Able to understand decimals as an extension to the place value system
- Able to order decimal numbers up to three decimal places (3dp)
- Able to round decimal numbers up to three decimal places
- Able to add and subtract decimal numbers up to three decimal places
The Linear Series (Books 1-20) cover ALL learning intentions in the curriculum. They start at Year 0 (Book 1) and continue to Year 6 (Stage 6). The Linear Series books are recommended if you wish to support your child through the mathematics curriculum as they grow.
The Subject Area books (addition and subtraction, multiplication and fractions) are collections of the material taken from the Linear Series (Books 1-20). The Subject Area books cover only learning intentions that are relevant to that book. The Subject Area books are recommended if your child has a particular difficulty in one area, like fractions.
