Multiplication Set e-Copy

Level 1 Multiplication covers the multiplication only learning intentions from the Linear Series for children aged about 5 to 7 years old (Years 1 to 3).

At this level, students are still using the precursor to multiplication, called “skip counting”, and are just beginning to recognise the meaning of the multiplication symbol (x). Towards the end of this level, students begin to understand the meaning of the 2x, 5x and 10x tables, and perhaps commit some of these to memory.

The learning intentions covered in this book are:

• Able to skip count in twos and tens
• Able to skip count in fives
• Able to solve multiplication problems by skip counting
• Understands the x symbol
• Knows multiplication is commutative
• Knows the multiplication facts x2, x5 and x10

Level 2 Multiplication covers the multiplication only learning intentions from the Linear Series for children aged about 7 to 9 years old (Years 3 to 5).

At this level, students are encouraged to commit their times tables to memory and understand the meaning of multiplication. They are beginning to grasp the relationship between skip counting (e.g., 3, 6, 9, 12), repeated addition (3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12), multiplication (4 x 3 = 12) and division (12 ÷ 4 = 3) although this may only just be emerging.

The learning intentions covered in this book are:

• Knows multiplication facts x3
• Knows multiplication facts x9
• Knows multiplication facts x4
• Knows multiplication facts x6
• Knows multiplication facts x8
• Knows multiplication facts x7
• Has knowledge of the doubling and halving strategy
• Has knowledge of the distributive property of multiplication
• Knows multiplication facts x11 and x12

Level 3 Multiplication covers the multiplication only learning intentions from the Linear Series for children aged about 9 to 11 years old (Years 5 to 7).

At this level, students should have committed most of their times tables (to 12 x 12) to memory and understand the fundamental concept of multiplication. They should now be gaining awareness of the relationship between multiplication and division and be starting to develop the ability to extend their core strategies for addition and subtraction to multiplication (and later division). From here, students have a base knowledge to grasp algebra.

 

The learning intentions covered in this book are:

• Able to multiply a 2-digit number by a single-digit number using a mental method
• Able to multiply a 2-digit number by a single-digit number using a written method
• Able to multiply a 3-digit number by a single-digit number using a mental method
• Able to multiply a 3-digit number by a single-digit number using a written method
• Knows and understands square numbers up to 20x20
• Able to use multiplication facts to solve division problems
• Able to identify factors and multiples

The Linear Series (Books 1-20) cover ALL learning intentions in the curriculum. They start at Year 0 (Book 1) and continue to Year 6 (Stage 6). The Linear Series books are recommended if you wish to support your child through the mathematics curriculum as they grow.

The Subject Area books (addition and subtraction, multiplication and fractions) are collections of the material taken from the Linear Series (Books 1-20). The Subject Area books cover only learning intentions that are relevant to that book. The Subject Area books are recommended if your child has a particular difficulty in one area, like fractions.
